Chronic regional pain syndrome (CRPS), also known as complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS), is a debilitating condition characterized by persistent, severe pain that often begins after an injury.Although the original injury has healed, the pain persists or worsens and spreads to other parts of the body.

Symptoms of CRPS

  • Intense, burning pain: This is often described as a “fire-like” or “electric shock” sensation.

  • Sensitivity: The affected area may be extremely sensitive to touch, temperature changes or even light breezes.

  • Swelling: The affected limb may be swollen and look swollen.

  • Skin changes: The skin may become discolored (red, blue or white), shiny or excessively sweaty.

  • Restricted range of motion:  Movement of the affected limb may be painful and restricted.

  • Muscle atrophy: The muscles in the affected area may become weak and shrink.

Causes of CRPS

The exact cause of CRPS is not known, but it is thought to be the result of an overactive nervous system. After an injury, the body's pain response can become exaggerated and dysfunctional.Treatment of CRPSThere is no cure for CRPS, but treatment aims to relieve pain and improve quality of life.Treatment options include:

  • Pain medication: Over-the-counter or prescription pain medications can help relieve pain.

  • Physical therapy: Exercises and stretches can help maintain range of motion and improve function.

  • Occupational therapy: This can help with activities of daily living and adapting to the limitations of the condition

  • Nerve blocks: Injections of medication into the affected area can help block pain signals.

  • Spinal cord stimulation: This involves implanting a device that sends electrical signals to the spinal cord to block the pain

  • Psychological therapies: Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and other psychological interventions can help manage the emotional impact of chronic pain.

It is important to note that CRPS is a complex condition and treatment can vary from person to person. If you or someone you know is suffering from the symptoms of CRPS, it is important to see a doctor to get a diagnosis and appropriate treatment.
